Use of laser interferometry for the analysis and understanding of explosive valves
Abstract
A velocity interferometer system for any reflector (VISAR) is being used extensively in the analysis of explosively actuated valves. This VISAR provides the information necessary for a better understanding of the interactions occurring during the operation of these explosive valves. This laser interferometer system is described along with the operation of an explosive valve. The paper summarizes much of the experimental work performed on explosive valves in which the laser interferometer system was an integral part. Attention is given to the use of the laser interferometer system in monitoring the actual velocities present in a valve, and as part of an explosive pressure measurement system. Both uses are unique first-time applications of such a system, made possible only by the increased sensitivity of this VISAR.
