The utilization programme for the Symphonie satellite
Abstract
The French-German Symphonie project, initiated in 1967, involved the development, manufacture, and utilization of two synchronous telecommunication satellites and of two ground stations on the territories of France and Germany. The present paper shows how the problems were overcome that had to be confronted when, in the course of the project, the Europa II program of ELDO was canceled, and the satellite interfaces to the launch vehicle, the orbital injection procedure, and the test equipment and procedures had to be adapted to the Thor Delta 2914 launch vehicle. The scientific experiments conducted onboard the Symphonie satellites and the testing of novel transmission procedures are discussed. An attempt is made to put the achievements of the European space industry into proper perspective.
