European capabilities in the field of microwave tubes for space use
Abstract
Microwave amplifier tubes (TWT's) for communications satellite applications have been developed in Europe, and are in operational service in orbit. Some development background and technical design aspects are presented, together with typical performance figures. Particular emphasis is given to tube design features and testing programmes which are aimed at establishing high confidence in their long-life performance and reliability capability. High power tubes designed for direct-broadcast satellite projects are also described, with basic performance data, and new tube developments for future space applications extending to the mm-wave region are presented.
