Operating experience in the Canadian domestic satellite systems
Abstract
The paper describes methods used by Telesat Canada to maintain and operate unattended satellite earth stations throughout the Canadian Arctic. The importance of nontechnical personnel is stressed - these people perform 'first-aid' maintenance and provide information to technicians further south. Heavy route, network television, northern telecommunications, remote television, thin route, frontier television, and transportable earth stations are characterized. The organization of operations control is explained.
