Dynamics of the chemistry of electronically excited atoms in defined quantum states
Abstract
The research program described in this report is concerned with the study of the chemistry of electronically excited halogen atoms in the gas phase. These atomic species are interesting not only in terms of developing model systems for understanding the general chemistry of electronically excited atoms, but also because of their importance in the fields of laser isotope separation and chemical laser development. In essence, this research concerns itself with the elucidation of the role of electronic energy in affecting the chemistry or photochemistry of excited halogen atoms and molecules. While much is known about the dynamics of chemical and physical processes which are carried out on the lowest potential energy hypersurface correlating with reactants and products in their electronic ground state, relatively little is known about the dynamics of such phenomena as energy transfer and chemical reactivity on higher-lying potential hypersurfaces.
