The mass of the halo population.
Abstract
Evidence relating to the mass of the halo of the Galaxy is reviewed. Arguments based on theory and observation are presented which imply a halo mass of 40 billion solar masses within the orbit of the sun and 12 solar masses within 10 pc of the sun. Estimates indicating that part of the halo mass is 'missing' are examined, and it is suggested that stars of less than 0.2 solar mass probably account for the difference. The density distribution in the halo is considered, and it is shown that the total mass density in the halo apparently falls off slightly more slowly than that of globular clusters.
