The application of a highly permeable medium to reduce spin-up time and to stabilize a liquid-filled shell
Abstract
Laboratory experiments and projectile flight tests describe a technique that can reduce the spin-up time of a liquid contained within a cylinder. When the end wall regions of a cylinder are lined with a highly permeable material, the secondary circulation that controls the spin-up process is greatly enhanced, and a reduction in the spin-up time is achieved. Since the time to spin-up is decreased, then the time during which a liquid-induced instability could act is also decreased.
