Parametric excitation of nonlinear oscillations at the upper hybrid resonance
Abstract
Demchenko (1971) has studied the excitation of nonlinear oscillations in an inhomogeneous plasma by an external monochromatic electric field, showing that the dependence of the equilibrium density of the plasma on the space coordinates leads to parametric excitation of longitudinal oscillations at hybrid resonances. In the present analysis, it is shown that nonuniformity of a static magnetic field gives rise to a resonance of parametric type. Expressions for the oscillation increments are derived, and the conditions for the onset of parametric instability are identified.
