Meteosat
Abstract
The aims of the Meteosat program are enumerated and the various subsystems making up the first Meteosat satellite are described. The following goals are identified: cloud cover identification, measurement of sea surface and cloud-top temperatures, measurement of water vapor content of upper troposphere, measuring the balance between incoming and back-reflected sun energy, measurement of wind velocities and directions, distribution of corrected weather images and data to remote-lying stations, and collection and distribution of meteorological warnings from ships, buoys, and low-lying satellites. Means by which these activities will be carried out are described. General information on the layout of the satellite and the measurement and control system of the satellite is provided.
