Probabilistic simulation of the photodetection process with application to optical communication
Abstract
The paper considers the recording of weak signals by a photodetector operating in the photon counting mode in the presence of shot noise. The photodetection process is modeled for the case of multiplicative and additive noise in the optical communication channel. Simulation of the conversion of background photons into photoelectrons is reduced to simulation of random variables governed by the Poisson distribution with prescribed mean. This makes it possible to simplify and accelerate the simulation.
