Linear electromagnetic-wave interaction in an inhomogeneous magnetically active plasma
Abstract
An asymptotic method is outlined which makes it possible to divide the initial equations for fields in a plane-stratified plasma into two independent systems, each of which describes different types of wave propagating in one direction. The coefficients of the equations obtained are found to be regular at points where the normal-wave refractive indices are equal. The equations are used to analyze a specific type of interaction which has been considered in connection with studies of LF waves in the ionosphere. A reference-system technique is employed to obtain a solution which describes the field in the interaction region but transforms into the geometrical-optics solution outside that region. The wave transformation coefficients are compared with those obtained by the phase-integral method.
