Low-mass flare stars
Abstract
This book contains observational results on the activity of UV Ceti-type flare stars. Photometric and spectroscopic observations of optical flares are discussed, along with characteristics of the radio and X-ray bursts that accompany these flares, data on the slowly varying emission spectrum associated with the stellar chromospheres, and observations of small brightness variations due to the nonuniform surface brightness of the stars. A theoretical analysis of the observed phenomena is performed, emphasizing evidence for the hypothesis that solar activity and the activity of UV Ceti flare stars are identical as well as reasons for considering flare stars as low-mass magnetic stars. The astronomical characteristics of flare stars are examined, and the question of the evolution of these stars is considered. A catalog of UV Ceti stars in the solar neighborhood is also provided.
