Compute backscatter from radar calibration spheres
Abstract
In the calibration of radar systems use is often made of conducting spheres, which have no aspect-angle sensitivity in their backscattering characteristics, and have backscattering coefficients that can be computed exactly. It is possible to convert the exact Mie-series formulation for sphere scattering into an equivalent (exact) form which can be computed on a small, programmable calculator. An analysis based on Bessel and Hankel functions is considered and approaches are discussed to simplify expressions for algebraic analysis. The solution of the problem by calculator is also described.
