VHF-radar echoes from the troposphere and stratosphere
Abstract
The Sousy-VHF-radar system is described, and operational test results are presented. Topics discussed include the structure of radar echos, the partial reflection or scattering of VHF-radar signals, and some typical features of digitized radar echoes. Significant echos from the troposphere were detected even with low sensitivity (100 kW, 80 sq m antenna) and without any digital signal processing, and characteristics of patchy layers, coherence time, and wind velocity are reported. The observed signal strength indicates that partial reflection as well as scattering has to be taken into account. Velocity measurements, horizontal radar wind measurements, and an example of a height-time-intensity diagram are presented and interpreted.
