Measurement of the helium isotopic abundance in primary cosmic rays.
Abstract
Results are presented for stratospheric measurements of the isotopic abundance of helium nuclei in primary cosmic rays in the energy range around 1 GeV/n, which were performed at midlatitudes with scintillation- and Cerenkov-counter telescopes aboard a high-altitude aerostat. Corrections for the effects of delta-electrons in the Cerenkov counter are discussed. A mean value of 0.15 + or - 0.04 is determined for the He-3/(He-3)+(He-4) ratio for energies of 1.13 GeV/n and higher.
