New transmission code for digital optical communications
Abstract
A code for optical-fiber transmission systems with simple inexpensive repeaters is proposed. This transmission code is a two-level alternate-mark inversion code where a space is coded by a transition at the midpoint of the bit interval with no transition at the beginning. It is shown that the proposed code has the narrowest spectrum among codes that satisfy pertinent design requirements. A simple coder and decoder are schematically presented, and waveforms at characteristic points in the coder and decoder are shown, which completely explains the coding and decoding procedure. The main application of the proposed code is expected in optical communication systems where the distance between repeaters is loss limited.
