The GRIM 2 terrestrial gravitational potential model. Determination and evaluation.
Abstract
The calculation of GRIM 2 from satellite laser and photographic observations as well as from gravimetric data for one degree by one degree square units is described, and GRIM 2 is compared with other models. Zonal harmonics up to the 23rd and tesseral harmonics up to a value of 30 for each of the two subscripts were determined. GRIM 2 is found to be far superior to GRIM 1 and to provide a solution close to GEM 8. Long and medium wavelength features determined from GRIM 2 are in accord with GEOS 3 altimetry data. The Stokes formula was used to calculate a geoid in the framework of GRIM 2 for the purpose of clarifying short-wave features. The characteristics of the geoid indicate numerous details of agreement with altimeter data.
