Hughes domestic communications satellite systems
Abstract
The HS-333 and the larger Comstar spacecraft are described; their role in providing domestic telephony and TV broadcast capabilities for Indonesia, Canada and the U.S. is discussed. The antenna, communications and telemetry subsystems of the two satellites receive attention, and the despin subsystem and polarization screens of the Comstar satellites are considered. The Comstar satellites are each capable of handling 15,000 telephone conversations, about twice the capacity of the HS-333 spacecraft. Domestic communications networks relying on Intelsat leases are also mentioned.
