Period changes and evolutionary status of 18 Algoltype systems.
Abstract
Period changes in 17 double-line binaries and the single-line binary V367 Cyg are investigated on the basis of available times of minima. O-C diagrams are plotted, residuals are calculated, and some changes in orbital periods are described. The evolutionary status of each of these 18 Algol-type systems is considered. It is concluded that: (1) S Cnc, U Cep, KU Cyg, V367 Cyg, Beta Lyr, V356 Sgr, and V453 Sco are most probably evolving according to Case B; (2) SV Cen, V Pup, and Mu-1 Sco are evolving according to Case A; (3) UX Mon may be tentatively classified as Case B; (4) U CrB, u Her, and TU Mon may be tentatively classified as Case A; and (5) U Sge, Lambda Tau, Z Vul, and RS Vul represent marginal situations where evolutionary status can be determined only after the accuracy of the orbital elements is improved.
