Operational systems - Marisat
Abstract
A report on the current status of the Marisat system is given. Marisat is an operational satellite communications service to merchant ships. The two-ocean system went on-line in mid-1976 and has been in continuous and successful operation on about one hundred ships. Ship terminal service availability has been in the 95% area for a period of ten months. A fairly large market exists for fitting semi-submersible and surface drilling ships that operate in deep water and in remote areas. It is estimated that six voice channels will service one thousand ships while 44 duplex telex channels should service several thousand ships without significant queueing. With the increase of voice-channel capacity to six channels per satellite, a rapid increase in usage of facsimile, data and slow-scan television is expected.
