Designing reliability into high voltage power processors
Abstract
Circuit, packaging, component and material design techniques are presented for achieving extremely high reliability in high voltage (10 to 30 kV) aerospace power systems. Particular consideration is given to aspects of (1) corona minimization, (2) corona immunization, (3) arc proofing, (4) component and material screening, (5) the careful use of manufacturing drawings and processes, and (6) reliability testing. In order to verify the adequacy of the guidelines, a long-term reliability demonstration and a life-test program were performed on two designs of oil-filled high voltage power processors (17 kV and 7 kV).
