Accelerated heat exchanger core testing
Abstract
A program has been started at Argonne National Laboratory to test high performance evaporators and condensers being considered for the 1-MWe ocean test of OTEC heat exchangers. The experimental part of the program will be carried out in a test facility containing three loops - warm water, cold water, and ammonia. The test units will be about 1/40th the size of those for the ocean test, and fresh water will be used instead of sea water. Otherwise, test conditions will be typical of the ocean test. The objectives of the program are to measure performance of the units and to compare performance with that expected from data obtained from single-tube tests and design calculations. Testing of the first group of heat exchangers - three evaporators and two condensers - is scheduled to start with overall performance tests, beginning in August 1977.
