Energy management for commercial buildings and cooling storage
Abstract
We estimate the feasibility and cost of installing chilled water storage in new buildings, so that electric chillers can be turned off during times of peak power demand. To replace a 100-ton chiller for 5 hours, the cost of thermal storage may be as low as $250/ton, about half the cost of new gas turbines and distribution systems to supply the peak power. Cost of storage is presented as a function of chiller size.
