Situation of the Spacelab project
Abstract
Spacelab is reviewed in terms of its current operational readiness. Major technological difficulties are said to have been resolved, and the first completed units should be delivered to the Shuttle Orbiter on time. The management structure for the Spacelab program is discussed, emphasizing integration of the program with NASA. Design and performance criteria are evaluated, especially, the use of pallets in the Orbiter payload-bay. Mission plans are presented, including: earth-observation, astronomy and space physics, materials processing, and bio-medical research.
