A central multichannel coupler for connections between fiber optic bundles
Abstract
A seven-channel fiber optic coupler was characterized and studied in order to find ways of reducing the dispersion of detected levels on a single receiving channel. Two types of couplers were analyzed. These are couplers with grouped bundles and couplers having detachable bundles with a central rectilinear U-shape fiber. The influence of a diffuser in the middle of the central fiber was especially studied. Characteristics examined include attenuation at the emitting and receiving bases relative to grouped bundles, loss at insertion for detachable bundles, and the dispersion of detected levels on a receiving channel. Results show the star coupler configuration performs better than the "T" type.
