Gyroscope development and its impact on the application of inertial technology
Abstract
Problems in the development and manufacture of floated gyroscope systems are discussed, including acquisition of patents, the relationship between instrument and system development, error analysis and correction, and achievement of competitive status in the market. Vertical gyro performance and azimuth gyro performance are studied; the introduction of digital computer technology is mentioned; and the difficulties involved in shifting from ball bearings to gas bearings, which demand extremely precise finishing of hard materials, are described. A Digital Inertial Navigation System is analyzed, together with problems associated with its reaction time. Design of a two axis dry gyroscope, relatively insensitive to variations in temperature and adaptable to the most severe airborne military and land-based environments is also given. Development times for the dry gyro system and for the laser gyro are projected.
