A general formulation and analytical solutions for multi-dimensional radiative transfer in nongray gases
Abstract
Expressions in terms of the total band absorptance instead of the spectral absorption coefficient are derived for the radiative flux and its divergence in the case of multidimensional problems involving nongray gases. For planar geometry, the slab band absorptance is employed and the resulting expressions are even more compact. The expressions are used to determine the bulk radiative exchange approximation, which is correct in the optically thin and thick limits. The utility and accuracy of this approximation are demonstrated by two solutions of one- and three-dimensional problems involving nongray gases. The validity of the three-dimensional solution is proved for a two-dimensional case.
