Ablation calculations for the front tip of a reentry body
Abstract
Calculation methods applicable to reentry nose cones are reviewed. It is shown that for reentry velocities so great that the aerodynamic fluxes are severely perturbed, the nose cone shape variation must be taken into account. Various criteria used to define the transition zone are presented including those of Stetson and Sandia. Application to the case of silicon resins and carbon-carbon composites is detailed.
