Image navigation for geosynchronous meteorological satellites
Abstract
Navigation techniques applicable to the interactive (the algorithm originated in McIDAS) processing of spin scan image data from the SMS and GOES are described. Users are offered a computer-controlled video display capable of presenting timelapse sequences of full-resolution image sectors for extraction of wind fields by tracking cloud tracers. Capability is provided for accurate transformation between image coordinates (line, pixel) and earth coordinates (latitude, longitude). This capability serves three principal applications: automatic image alignment, wind speed computation from raw tracking data, and supplying earth location information for cloud height and wind flow field calculations.
