The convergence of computing and telecommunications systems
Abstract
A description is given of new services which can be offered as the result of the reduction of costs in the areas of communications and computation. The new services are related to the introduction of computer communications systems. The importance of the new services to the economy is examined. An investigation is conducted regarding the arguments for regulatory control as proposed by the major potential competing suppliers. Attention is given to the history of potential suppliers in the information economy, the disintegration of the boundary between suppliers, a comparison concerning the applications of microcomputers and large interconnected computers, aspects of distributed processing, the characteristics of the digital channel, digital switching, and details regarding the regulatory issue.
