Theoretical models and numerical estimates of acoustic signals of high-energy cosmic particles in the ocean
Abstract
The generation of acoustic noise by deceleration of high-energy elementary particles in liquids has been documented in several publications by various groups of physicists, who have also provided tentative models for understanding and prediction. In this report several theoretical models are rederived, assembled, and compared, and further development is undertaken on a selected few. Numerical calculations are made in the specific cases of muons and neutrinos and conclusions are drawn as to the conditions under which the noise of cosmic particles in the ocean can be detected by hydrophones.
