Comprehensive report on the horizon crossing indicator flown on ESRO-4
Abstract
A horizon crossing indicator (HCI) which was flown as a technological experiment on the European satellite ESRO-4 provided useful data from launch (Nov. 21, 1972) until re-entry (April 15, 1974). The various phases of the HCI project are described: development, qualification, integration into the spacecraft, launch, in-flight operation, and analysis of the data. Particular attention is given to the optimization process applied in the definition of the optical parameters of the sensor and to the Kalman filtering approach employed in the evaluation of the overall performance of the sensor and of its accuracy.
