Experiences with the ASSESS 2 lidar experiment
Abstract
The lidar experiment on the second ASSESS (Airborne Science Spacelab Experiments System Simulation) flight in May 1977 at Ames Research Center is discussed. Light pulses in the wavelength range of 1.06 micrometer from Nd:glass laser were transmitted vertically downwards and the backscattered radiation from the earth and from atmospheric particles were received on a radiation detector by means of a parabolic mirror. It was found that for a Spacelab mission only experiments can be used that have been tested for a long time onboard an aircraft and that operate nearly completely automatically.
