The non-linear analysis of embankment and gravity dams
Abstract
Nonlinear finite element analyses for predicting the behavior of embankment and gravity dams are critically evaluated and new approaches are presented. The quality of the analyses is studied by comparing observed performance of the structure with computed results and by comparing the behavior of physical models with corresponding numerical simulations. The first part of this thesis applies the finite element method to the analysis of embankment dams. In the second half, an experimental investigation into the stability of gravity dams under static loads is described and results from the model test are compared with the corresponding finite element predictions. The numerical analyses use a combined no-tension and elastic-plastic procedure. A novel sand-wax material was developed for the models.
