Experimental calibration of the quartz-magnetite oxygen isotope geothermometer
Abstract
Oxygen isotope analyses of the mineral and fluid phases were performed by extracting oxygen via standard bromine pentafluoride techniques and combusting the free oxygen to CO2. The oxygen isotopic fractionation between quartz and magnetite was measured directly by using CO2 gas produced from magnetite and quartz as the standard and sample gases, respectively. The calibration of the oxygen isotope geothermometer for quartz and magnetite resulting from this investigation was applied to published isotopic analyses of 131 igneous and metamorphic rocks.
