Apsidal motion of rings in binary systems.
Abstract
The rates of change of semimajor axis, eccentricity, and orientation have been computed for a variety of elliptic rings in binary systems. The rings were allowed to surround either one or both stars. Thin-ring and thick-disk configurations were found with rates of apsidal rotation appropriate to the rate of change of the relative strengths of the wings of the Balmer lines (V/R) in Be stars. These disks can produce a radial-velocityexcitation gradient for the shell lines of either sign. A very narrow range of thin rings was found with rates of apsidal rotation which may be appropriate for the distortion wave in RS CVn systems. Key words: binary stars-Be stars-RS CVn stars-mass exchange
