A search for diffuse interstellar bands in far-ultraviolet wavelengths.
Abstract
Far-ultraviolet data obtained at 0.2 A resolution with Copernicus are used to search for diffuse interstellar ban&' between 1114 A(S.9S -5) and 1450 A(6.90 -1). Extinction curves are derived using unreddened comparison stars for th(' five program stars, and residuals are calculated from quadratic fits to these curves; the residual curves themselves an.' then averaged together to suppress noise introduced by guidance drifts and mismatching stellar lines. In the final aver- age curve for the four stars with similar UV extinction, only one feature, centered near 1416 A(7.06 -1) survives th(.' statistical tests and is considered possibly real. The upper limit on the central depth of other features is 10% foir E(B-V) 0.3. Key words: interstellar extinction-ultraviolet-diffuse bands
