Maritime communication satellites
Abstract
First it is briefly explained why a future replacement of the terrestrial maritime radio services by a maritime communications satellite system is intended. This is followed by an overview of the existing and planned maritime communications satellite services. The basic requirements to be met by a maritime communications satellite system are given and some transmission aspects such as ship antenna characteristics, modulation methods and use of the frequency spectrum are shortly discussed. Finally the article lists the various efforts and plans for the introduction of a maritime satellite communications system and the economic problems connected with it.
