Hydrodynamic theory of a cosmic plasma
Abstract
Consideration is given to a hydrodynamic theory of the interplanetary plasma, noting kinetic equations for distribution functions, a collisional integral in Boltzmann form, and hydrodynamic equations for collisionless and partially ionized plasmas. The general characteristics of hydrodynamic plasma motion are discussed, including the distribution of small perturbations and nonlinear waves under various conditions. The hydrodynamic theory is extended to the interplanetary plasma with reference to models of the plasma atmosphere of stars and the solar wind. The characteristics of interstellar gas are outlined, including the stability of ionization fronts, shock waves in the interstellar medium, and the influence of magnetic fields. Particular attention is given to the spiral structure of galaxies.
