Crystallographic data for authigenic phillipsite from manganese nodules
Abstract
Microscopic phillipsite crystals occur as elongated prisms that extend outward from the walls of interstitial cavities in manganese nodules from the southern Argentine Basin. X-ray diffraction data and unit cell dimensions indicate that these authigenic crystals correspond to those phillipsites which form from alteration of palagonitic materials on the ocean floor. Textural features of the nodules indicate that the phillipsite crystals were more likely deposited during the growth history of the nodules, thus suggesting a relationship between the crystals and the nodules themselves in terms of mode of origin.
