Transistor amplifier design considerations
Abstract
The paper discusses the main options open to the transistor amplifier designer when the device must meet, besides the usual requirements pertaining to gain, bandwidth, and standing wave ratio (SWR), requirements on noise figure, third-order distortion, and dynamic range. Trade-offs among these parameters must be made. The use of Smith charts for achieving optimal trade-offs is illustrated. The main characteristics of available broadband solid state power amplifiers are summarized.
