Repeaters for optical communications systems
Abstract
Repeaters for fiber optical communications systems based on binary PCM are discussed; essential considerations related to the engineering of binary PCM repeaters include photodiodes, electrical regeneration and directly modulated semiconductor sources. Problems in the specification of avalanche photodiodes are mentioned, and attention is given to optical couplers, the bit error rate and retiming accuracy of PCM regenerators, line coding, and error detection techniques for a line. Construction of a 9 km, 2-way, 140 Mbit/sec optical transmission line with two intermediate repeaters is described.
