The earth's accretion rate of cosmic dust derived from neon isotopes in terrestrial formations.
Abstract
A precision isotopic technique involving magnetic-resonance mass spectroscopy has been used to determine the rate of cosmic dust accretion on the basis of neon isotope (Ne-20/Ne-22) concentrations in different earth structural formations. The value of accretion rate that was obtained is somewhat greater than expected given the effects of the melting and burnup of a fraction of the particles in the atmosphere. The dominant role of factors which would produce an increase in the rate (the focusing effect of the gravity field, the greater flux of dust in the past, etc.) is emphasized.
