Operation of an avalanche photodiode in the electric heterodyning mode
Abstract
The behavior of an avalanche photodiode when used as an optical-radiation detector and as an electric-signal mixer is investigated. A conversion-loss analysis is performed using the parameters of the LFD-2 germanium avalanche photodiode. Experimental data are presented concerning the low-voltage electric heterodyning mode of this photodiode during reception of He-Ne laser radiation intensity-modulated at frequencies of 5 kHz and 4.5 GHz. The results obtained for the heterodyning mode are compared with those for the direct-detection mode.
