Ionization energies of the hydrogen molecule ion in strong magnetic fields
Abstract
The problem of the hydrogen ion molecule H2(+) in the presence of a strong magnetic field is investigated using the variational method of Rajagonpal et al. (1972). A single-parameter trial function and a three-parameter trial function with proper linear combinations of unperturbed hydrogen-atom wave functions are employed to determine the ionization energies and equilibrium internuclear separations of H2(+) in magnetic fields with intensities of up to 50 billion G. It is concluded that the present method of variational calculation is more reliable than the method of de Melo et al. (1976) for magnetic fields with intensities less than 30 billion G.
