Marginal mode to the second order for spherical stellar systems.
Abstract
The energyminimization method is used to study the stability of spherical stellar systems. The timedependent marginal mode of displacement of a stellar system is written explicity. This aspherical mode, which is a solution of the VlasovPoisson equations, corresponds to a perturbation on the energy and on the square of angular momentum. In contrast with the firstorder case, the second variation of energy is found to vanish for this secondorder mode.
