Density Wave Propagation through the Galactic Disk
Abstract
The three-dimensional dynamical behavior of gas particles in the galactic disk has been studied by means of density-wave theory. It is found that the thermal pressure of the gas theoretically has a minimum effect in the formation and maintenance of the spiral arms except in the outer region of the Galaxy. It is also observed that the amplitudes of the perturbed gas velocities are decreased by the pressure. From which it is suggested that the gas pressure may partially save the galactic disk from gravitational collapse. Wave propagation through the galactic disk has also been studied under certain special conditions.
