Cadmium telluride base X-ray detectors
Abstract
Enhanced energy resolution is achieved with MSM structure semiconductor detectors of X-radiation through moderate cooling (to minus 50 C) as a result of lowered current noise and heightened operating voltage. The cooling is achieved with the aid of a thermoelectric microcooling device. Energy spectra of gammas emitted by an Am-241 preparation and of X-ray photons emitted by Fe and Ge excited by a Cd-109 source are displayed. The thermoelectrically cooled detectors are recommended for use in nuclear geophysics, geology, mining, and medicine.
