ICAM - The Air Force's Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing program
Abstract
The paper outlines the new manufacturing initiative of the Air Force called the Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing (ICAM) program for modernization of every major manufacturing function. The ICAM program covers the development of individual subsystems according to a master plan with the following broad objectives: reduce aerospace-systems cost, provide leadership to industry, increase competence in aerospace manufacturing, provide for ICAM technology transfer, improve the USAF's military position, and demonstrate the capability for a totally integrated manufacturing system. Management of the ICAM program now includes three elements: a strong Air Force central team, a mechanism for private-sector technical and executive review, and participation by other governmental agencies. Beginning with sheet metal fabrication, the ICAM program aims at revolutionizing batch parts-manufacturing.
