Linear polarization of Halpha in the Be star Gamma Cassiopeiae.
Abstract
The reported investigation shows that the position-angle changes in the H-alpha line of gamma Cas can be explained both qualitatively and quantitatively by a rotating disklike envelope. It is concluded that the envelope surrounding gamma Cas is for the most part axisymmetric. The assumption of axial symmetry simplifies the problem of modeling the envelope a great deal. The discussed investigation demonstrates that position-angle changes in the emission lines of Be stars cannot be taken to indicate the presence of interstellar polarization alone.
